Support Grows for Legacy, According to New Poll
A story in the Deseret News this morning reports on a new statewide Dan Jones survey on the Legacy Parkway. No surprise to us, support is growing steadily over time. Statewide, the survey shows 63 percent support going ahead with the Legacy. This compares with 49 percent who supported the action in 2002, right after the 10th Circuit Court issued their ruling halting work on the project.
And, once again, the Sierra Club trots out its mantra that transit should be given the chance to run first and change everyone's minds, and that the Redwood Road alternative will take care of the rest of the need. What evidence do these groups base this solution on? Some of the best minds in transportation have worked years on the Legacy study, taking evidence from existing systems all around the world to show what is reasonable to expect from transit in this corridor, and what will be needed in new roadway construction to meet the demand. Yet somehow, the Sierra Club thinks they know better, with no credible work to support their views. Hmmm.

I have never felt the environmental argument was a strong one. I do, however believe the long- term quality of life issue is a very strong argument against the Legacy Highway.
I believe this highway is being approached backwards. I believe the funds should be green- lighted now for immediate construction of mass transit options. Only then should we consider more highways.
If we build roads first, mass transit will remain underused and also underfunded.
It will be impossible to catch up on mass transit building in the future when we have no more room to build highways.
I have heard everyone insist that once we build Legacy Highway we can start working on other transportation options but I believe that is just talk to get the road built.
The Legacy Highway is blocking effective mass transit.
Ethan, the issue is a moot point. Because of the delays to Legacy caused by the lawsuit, commuter rail will now be up and running before Legacy can be built.
Also, Davis County officials are pushing UTA to build transit as fast as possible, but UTA has many priorities throughout the region, and only so much money coming from the federal agencies. And that money looks in jeopardy as President Bush looks to cut the federal budget. So how fast can we really go with transit, and why should other parts of the solution have to wait?

Ethan, Where have you been! Funds are being allocated for Mass Transit. Have you forgotten that the residents of Davis County voted for a sales tax increase for Transit in a number of years ago and that UTA is moving ahead with Commuter Rail. Because of the Lawsuit, commuter rail will most likely be completed before the Legacy Highway. The Legacy Parkway is not blocking effective mass transit.
You are making an assumption that if the Legacy Parkway is not built, that people will use Mass Transit in great numbers. Most likely if the Legacy Parkway is not built more people will try to find alternate routes through residential neighborhoods in South Davis County.
Transit will succeed only if it is efficient, effective and operated in a manner that people want to use it. An artificial stimulus, such as denying a highway that 80% of the people in Davis County support will not increase transit use as you suppose. You can dream all you want, but you can't change reality.
